People-per-computer is now computers-per-people. It wasn't that long ago that personal computers were an expensive management mess, but at least they were simple to deal with. Now every organization is expected to provide at least one computer for every end-user, if not a desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone, on top of an email account and dozens of other services.
As IT administrators, we know what works. We are exceptional at finding the perfect tools for our end-users. We can sniff out usability issues from the first demo. We know what tickets we'll get if the app isn't just right.
We have the highest pain tolerance for tools we use ourselves in IT. From admin consoles that take seconds (not milliseconds) to load, to user interfaces that look like they haven't been updated since the smartphone came out (and definitely don't work from our smartphones), we tend to put up with anything in the name of supporting our organizations and our end-users.
Admins deserve better. The command line is a place of refuge, an oasis in the desert. At least it works. At least it's fast. At least it's scriptable. But why are we in the desert in the first place? Why can't there be impeccable tools for IT that work equally well from a touchscreen as from a terminal? At Instinctive we're building that future.
